Just Kids

This past week I’ve been reading Patti Smith’s autobiography “Just Kids” and I’m inspired, heartbroken and thrilled by the story. It’s amazing to watch the two artist’s grow and change from lost, dreaming teenagers in Brooklyn to fully establishing themselves in the art and music scenes in New York in their late twenties. Patti was drawing [...]

Cover Song : Wonder Woman 47

Today I spent the morning at a cafe with DocPop drawing and watercoloring our own versions of classic comic covers! Today I decided to tackle Wonder Woman:

Maybe the silhouettes aren’t completely finished. Here’s the original:

I was also referred over to Covered, and they’ve got a very epic gallery of lots of great artists doing their own [...]

Cover Song : Detective Comics

I woke up today with the desire to do some good ol’ cover drawings from old superhero comics. Like cover songs, we can learn a lot from copying other work with our own style. I especially love the cheeky old DC comics, here’s my first one:

Here’s the original cover I worked from:

Here’s my holiday card image. I’ve been working on new Dee stories, and love the idea of her new giraffe companion. This rain has had a very positive effect of keeping me in, drawing and writing and painting.

A little hiatus from comics has allowed me to paint some new pieces and play with acrylics. I’m reading some literary classics and spending some time scripting out the next chapter of Siren Song.

As soon as I figure out the best way to release it, you will be the first to [...]

Highly Illogical

I stumbled upon this sketch of Spock that I did at SLG’s convention last year. I was randomly doing a bunch of little drawings to get people’s attention, including  Poison Ivy, Wolverine, and Spock, who was bought up by Kevin before the ink even dried. Fun stuff!

Also, just posted a new comic page over at [...]

Octopus Tattoo

octopustattoo

I’m excited to say I finished a new commission and I like how it turned out! Doublehappy joy asked for either Bunny Boy’s coffee shop tattoo girl, or an octopus holding lollipops. I of course took this as a challenge to combine the two. Here’s the inks before I painted her:

I’ve been doing a bunch of [...]

Projector

I bought an opaque projector off Craigslist this week.

It’s so much fun it’s crazy. So now I’m going through my sketchbooks and projecting my favorite little sketches huge! It’s amazingly freeing to draw so large and to know I’m not losing the looseness of my sketches in the process.

There’ll be a lot more of these as I [...]
